Business lessons from a natural disaster

EPISODE 7

Notes

Last week I was impacted by the devastating floods in Northern New South Wales. Whilst returning home, I became stuck on a flooded highway for the night sheltering in a tunnel with many other people. My anxiety over the work I was meant to be doing was making me feel sick.

Then our internet and phone services went down in my region for 5 days. It became impossible to conduct any work and I was constantly worried about not being able to get anything done in my business.

In this episode, I’m sharing 7 business lessons I learned from a natural disaster. This experience has led me to reflect on how I work in my business and how I can improve it so I don’t feel sick when I’m unable to do it myself.

There has to be a contingency system.

So I created a business continuity plan. This document is essential for your business as it outlines the specifics of how your business will continue to operate in an emergency situation. I encourage you to think about what will be relevant for your business and use the lessons I’ve learned to get you started.

We hope we’ll never need it but you’ll feel immensely reassured if you do. You can then place all of your focus on the emergency and not have to worry about what is (or isn’t) happening in your business.
